    Erläuterungen zum Werk

    Das Motiv des Weinstocks wurde erstmals im China der Tang-Dynastie (618-906) gebräuchlich und taucht später im Dekor der koreanischen Chosón-Periode (1392-1910) und in japanischen Lackarbeiten der Monoyama-Zeit (1573-1614) auf. In Japan blieb die Darstellung von Weinstöcken auch nach dem 17. Jh. selten. Der unbekannte Meister lehnt sich in der Gestaltung des Stellschirms an altchinesische Motive und Stilelemente der Unkoku-Schule an.

    Explanations for this object

    Vine trellises laden with vine spread out between plank fences, green hillocks and gold clouds. Imported from China, grapes were cultivated in Japan by the 12th century. The Cologne screens differ from other examples of the 17th century in their naturalistic depiction. The blue-violet modulation of the grapes, and the leaves, executed in varying shades of green and ochre with jagged outlines and riddled with holes, suggest natural decay. Compositionally the screens follow Kanô Eitoku’s (1543-1590) formula of enlarged motifs set against broad surfaces of gold leaf that create a shallow pictorial space.
