Erläuterungen zum Werk

Das Westzimmer Chinesische Farbholzschnitte von Min Qiji, datiert 1640 Die Holzschnitte zeigen Szenen aus dem Drama "Die Geschichte vom Westzimmer" von Wang Shifu (tätig um 1295-1307), dessen Handlung die Novelle "Schicksalhafte Begegnung" von Yuan Zhen (779-831) aufgreift. Dem Titelblatt mit dem Idealporträt der Heldin des Stücks, der schönen Yingying folgt Blatt 1, dessen Signatur und Siegel auf den Mannesnamen des bislang nur als Paläographen und Angehörigen der Druckerfamilie Min aus Wucheng, Provinz Zhejiang bekannten Min Qiji weisen. Dieser wurde im Jahre 1580 geboren und soll bis 1661 tätig gewesen sein. Das zyklische Datum auf Blatt 15 "geng chen" kennzeichnet hier das Jahr 1640, in dem der Meister den frühesten bisher bekannten Farbholzschnittzyklus zu einem literarischen Thema im Flächen- und Liniendruck als 60jähriger vollendet haben müßte. Damit gehört die Kölner Folge der letzten Ära der Ming-Dynastie mit der Devise Zhongzhen (1628-44) an, in deren Endphase die mandschurischen Truppen bereits große Teile des nordöstlichen China besetzt hatten. Die Blätter charakterisieren treffend die Szenen des Dramas mit ihren wichtigsten Rollen: den Studenten Zhang Junrui, der auf dem Weg zum Examen in der Hauptstadt im Kloster Pujiusi übernachtet, und Yingying begegnet, die dort mit Mutter, Bruder und Zofe Aufnahme gefunden hat, sowie die Entwicklung ihrer Zuneigung, die alle Konventionen außer acht ließ. Dabei verstand es Min Qiji, die meisten der Szenen geschickt - und nur dem guten Kenner des Theaterstücks verständlich - in verschlüsselter Form anzudeuten. Sie erscheinen bald als kunstvoll geschriebene Liebesgedichte (Bl. 3, 9), auf die Wandung eines zeitgenössischen Porzellans gemalt (Bl. 2), auf einem Bronzegefäß (Bl. 6), als Füllung einer altchinesischen Himmelskarte (Bl. 4), als schwebende Figuren eines Papiermobile (Bl. 5), als Bemalung einer Seidenlaterne (Bl. 14), als Traumszene in einer Dunstwolke (Bl. 16) oder in ein Puppentheater (Bl. 19) projiziert. Obgleich er dabei nach Art chinesischer Figurenmaler Körper und Gesichter nur summarisch wiedergab, Gewand, Haartracht und Schmuck hingegen genau detaillierte, wurden doch die Figuren der Hauptrollen entsprechend ihrem Lebensalter, ihrem Geschlecht, ihrem Status und ihrer Funktion unverkennbar charakterisiert. Auch zeigt das Kölner Album die von Menschen belebten Landschaften, Interiereurs, Tiere und Pflanzen sowie Gegenstände in der Tradition chinesischer Malerei, aber variiert zu einer neuen, volkstümlicheren Art der Schilderung. Zudem spiegelt sich in den meisten Blättern eine für China außergewöhnliche Experimentierfreude mit einer Vielfalt an Bildrahmungen (Bl. 1, 8, 11, 12, 17, 18), an Spiegelungen und Reflexen (Bl. 10, 11), an Hell-Dunkel-Effekten (Bl. 8, 18) und mit der erstmals aus der chinesischen Kunst bekanntgewordenen Wiedergabe von Schlagschatten (Bl. 11). Die Holzschnitte zeigen den für die Ming-Dynastie innovativen Stil flächiger Kolorierung. Illustrationen zu "Die Geschichte vom Westzimmer" erschienen als Teil des Dramentextes bereits im ausgehenden 15. Jahrhundert. Unmittelbares Vorbild für Min Qijis Holzschnittfolge dürften Chen Hongshous (1599-1652) Illustrationen dieses Dramas gewesen sein. Wie Signatur und Siegel des Min Qiji zeigen, nahm er den Namen des yuan-zeitlichen Malers Sheng Mou (tätig um 1310-1360) an, dessen Vorbild er sich verpflichtet fühlte. Die hochentwickelte Drucktechnik macht das Kölner Farbholzschnittalbum zu einem Unikat, das in den Sammlungen in Ost und West keinen Vergleich findet. Im Jahr 1962 erwarb der damalige Direktor des Museums für Ostasiatische Kunst, Werner Speiser, diese Serie als ein loses Konvolut von 21 Farbholzschnitten aus dem Nachlaß des lange Zeit in China tätigen Arztes Adam Breuer.
