Explanations for this object

The paintings originally decorated the front and rear sides of a one-piece screen (tsuitate) of the sort that were placed in the entrances of temples and affluent homes. Rosetsu was one of Maruyama Ôkyô’s (1733-1795) most talented students and from the 1780s on, was allowed to do major commissions for Zen temples and private estates in his name. The Cologne pieces match exactly the motifs that Ôkyô and Rosetsu chose for the interior decoration of Zen temples. The dogs must have reminded the beholder of the famous kôan: ‘Does a dog have Buddha-nature or not?’.
