Erläuterungen zum Werk

Yoshimochi war der 4. Shôgun oder Reichs-verweser der Ashikaga-Familie. Er gilt als einer der wichtigsten Förderer des Zen-Buddhismus. Wenige erhaltene Bilder zeugen von seinen eigenen künstlerischen Experimenten im neuen Malstil der Zen-Priester. Das eigenwillige, mit kalligraphischem Strich gemalte Portrait des legendären Priesters Bodhidharma trägt eine Aufschrift des Priesters Shunsaku Zenkô, der den Namen des damals regierenden Yoshimochi als Autor des Bildes nennt. Aufschrift: Eigens kam er von Indien her und narrte mit Leichtigkeit das Volk von China. Duftend ließ er fünf Blüten sich öffnen. Und drehte in einem Atemzug das Universum um. Dies Bildnis des erhabenen Bodhidharma wurde von Shôjo-in meisterhaft gemalt. Shunsaku, der alte Zenkô, brennt ehrerbietig Weihrauchstäbchen zum Lobpreis ab.

Explanations for this object

Bodhidharma (J.Daruma) is the first patriarch of Chan (J. Zen) Buddhism, believed to have transmitted the teaching to China during the 5th or 6th century. From the 14th century on, bust length or head-shot portraits of Bodhidharma became common, which capture him in meditation during intense spiritual practice, eyes bulging. The Cologne painting is attributed to the fourth Ashikaga shôgun and bears an inscription by the monk Shunsaku Zenkô of the Daitoku-ji Temple in Kyôto.
