Explanations for this object

Buddha Shakyamûni practiced austerities in the mountains before giving up asceticism as a means of achieving spiritual understanding. He descended to meditate under a Bodhi tree before his awakening. In Chan Buddhist art, this transitional moment visualized the concept of intuitive enlightenment. The sensitive brushwork makes the Cologne painting by the monk Chûan Shinkô an outstanding example of Zen-Buddhist apparition painting.
