Explanations for this object

The sliding doors represent the mature style of the nanga painter and famous haiku poet. When closed, the doors show a continuous landscape from right to left, which the viewer may meander with his eyes following the footpath. Nowhere is there a person or an animal to be seen. The motif of the empty pavilion, points to the influence of Yuan dynasty literati painters as Ni Zan (1301-1374) whose styles became available through Chinese printed painting manuals. Alongside Ike no Taiga (1723-1776), Buson was one of the most successful nanga painters in Kyôto.
