Explanations for this object

Tani Bunchô was a prominent nanga painter, who advised the shôgun as an expert on painting. Evidently he was commissioned to execute a painting on the basis of a woodblock print by Utamoro (1753-1806) and transformed the half-length figure into a standing courtesan. While she wrings out her towel, the kimono loosely wrapped around her allows a sight of her pink breast. In his inscription he quotes a poem from the Chinese classic “Book of Songs” (shijng). The poem describing the natural beauty of Chinese antiquity provided a welcome pretext for depicting the charms of the Japanese courtesan.
