Explanations for this object

The handscroll comprises 48 signed and sealed sketches of figures, landscapes, plants and animals rendered by pupils and successors of Maruyama Ôkyô. Possibly the scroll was not a collector’s item, but served painters of the Maruyama-Shijô school as a pattern book.
