When he moved to the Western border to retire from the world, he is said to have been urged by a border official to write down the ‘Classic of the Way and its Power’ (daode jing). The painting presents Laozi as a scholar-official, his robe delineated in mannered calligraphic strokes. The inscription is by Kôsetsu Sôritsu, the 181st abbot of Daitoku-ji Temple in Kyôto |
