Explanations for this object

The Chinese sage Laozi (6th century BCE) is held to be the founder of Daoism. When he moved to the Western border to retire from the world, he is said to have been urged by a border official to write down the ‘Classic of the Way and its Power’ (daode jing). The painting presents Laozi as a scholar-official, his robe delineated in mannered calligraphic strokes. The inscription is by Kôsetsu Sôritsu, the 181st abbot of Daitoku-ji Temple in Kyôto
