Like Sugawara no Michizane he was banished and destined to become an ‘angry ghost’, whose soul required to be propitiated in shrines where ceremonies were held in front of his portrait. Legend has it that courtiers who venerated his portrait were initiated to the secrets of poetry by the spirit present in his image. The poet is depicted in the contemplative pose of a Chinese scholar, supported on an armrest with inkstone and brush. |
