Explanations for this object

Xu You was an exemplary scholar of Chinese antiquity. When offered a reward for his services by the emperor, he rinsed his ears in the Ying river to cleanse himself of the impure implications. His friend Chao Fu demonstrated even greater moral uprightness by forbidding his ox from drinking the polluted water. Only Chao Fu is depicted in the screen, which appears to be a fragment of a larger folding screen or a set of sliding-doors. The right panel displays an essay by the Confucian scholar Kaiho Seiryô.
